UPDATE

Australian Soldier Killed, Five Injured in NT Training Accident

DARWIN — An Australian Army soldier has died, and five others have been injured following a tragic training accident at the Mount Bundey Training Area in the Northern Territory.

The Department of Defence confirmed on Wednesday that Corporal Brendan Hannam, a member of the 5th/7th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, passed away on Monday, 5 October 2026, following a single-vehicle rollover.

Five Soldiers Hospitalised

The incident, which occurred during a routine training exercise, also left five other soldiers injured.

  • Two soldiers remain admitted to a Darwin hospital in a stable condition.
  • Three soldiers are currently being monitored and supported at the Robertson Barracks Health Centre.

A Respected Combat Veteran

Corporal Hannam was a highly respected soldier within the broader Defence community. He was a combat veteran who deployed on Operation Highroad in Afghanistan and Operation Kudu in the United Kingdom.

Defence statement noted that he was deeply valued by his unit, mates, and commanders, adding that "his greatest pride was his family, whom he loved unconditionally." 

Defence Response

"The death of one of our soldiers is a tragedy and deeply felt by the Army family and across the broader Defence community," the Department of Defence said in a statement.

Defence stated that its highest priority is providing ongoing support to Corporal Hannam’s partner, children, family, and the other soldiers impacted by the crash. Officials have requested that the privacy of the grieving families and Defence personnel be respected.
