The Unbroken Line: Honouring Sacrifice, Seeking God

No matter where your posting takes you across this wide brown land or overseas, you belong to a massive communion of faith that death cannot break.

In the busy rush of modern Australia, the ancient feasts of All Saints’ and All Souls’ Day offer a powerful pause to look up, remember, and find our bearings. For those serving in the ADF, these days carry an intensely deep meaning. They bind us directly to an unbroken line of faithful men and women who walked the hard yards of duty and ultimate sacrifice before us.

On All Saints’ Day, we celebrate the ultimate "overwatch"—the countless ordinary people who lived with extraordinary integrity. Their examples remind us that holiness isn’t distant; it belongs right in the thick of our modern daily training, leadership, and community. As we heard yesterday at the Vatican, these saints followed the Lord to make their lives “a gift to God and to their neighbours.” They show us how to be rich in God's love even when facing the heavy trials of life.

On All Souls’ Day, we live out the core ADF promise to never leave a comrade behind. Through our prayers, we continue to stand by our departed brothers, sisters, and relatives, entrusting them to God’s eternal peace. This is a warm, encouraging invitation to actively seek God in all we do. Bring your anxieties, deployments, and families to Him in prayer without hesitation, knowing you belong to a massive communion of faith that death can never break.
