Pope Leo XIV is in good spirits and recovering on the 10th floor of Gemelli Hospital after undergoing successful thoracic surgery on Tuesday afternoon. The scheduled procedure went smoothly with no complications, and the Pope awoke normally. Holy See Press Office Director Matteo Bruni confirmed that the Pope was well enough to request dinner and spend the evening in the company of his secretaries and Vatican staff.
The three-hour medical intervention included a 90-minute operation to remove the lower lobe of the Pope’s right lung. A surgical team led by Professor Stefano Margaritora utilised a video-assisted technique to ensure a radical resection. During the procedure, an intraoperative histological examination confirmed the diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma, validating the findings from preoperative tests. Professor Massimo Antonelli led the anaesthesia team, supported by Dr. Giovanni Punzo and Dr Giuseppe Bello.
The Pope is expected to complete a planned one-week hospitalisation at Gemelli Hospital, with no changes currently communicated regarding his recovery timeline. In the coming days, medical staff will conduct post-operative examinations on the removed tissue to guide any further treatment. The Vatican plans to provide regular morning updates on the Pope's condition and ongoing recovery progress.
