An Australian military delegation visited the Philippines' 3rd Marine Brigade to strengthen defence partnerships and exchange leadership insights.

An Australian military delegation, accompanied by Catholic Military Ordinariate of Australia (CMOA) Chaplain Giles Atherton along with other ADF Staff College Officers, visited the 3rd Marine Brigade in Palawan to exchange leadership insights and strengthen Defence ties with the Philippines. This visit highlights ongoing efforts to bolster security cooperation between the two nations.

Australia's future senior military leaders got a closer look at the Philippine Marines' operations in Palawan after a delegation from the Australian Command and Staff College (ACSC) visited the headquarters of the 3rd Marine Brigade in Puerto Princesa City.

The visit formed part of the ACSC's study tour in the Philippines, giving its officers an opportunity to learn from their counterparts and exchange insights on military leadership and professional development.

Leading the Australian delegation was Lt Col. Patrick Schadel, lead directing staff of the college. He was joined by Col. Travis Day, defence attaché at the Australian Embassy in the Philippines.

Brigadier General Wilfredo B. Manalang Jr., commander of the 3rd Marine Brigade, received the delegation at the brigade headquarters in Barangay Tiniguiban.

During the engagement, Philippine Marine officers presented an overview of the brigade's mission and operations before holding discussions with the Australian officers on leadership, command experiences, and military best practices.

The 3rd Marine Brigade said the exchange was aimed at strengthening professional ties between the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Australian Defence Force while promoting greater understanding between the two militaries.

The visit comes as the Philippines and Australia continue to expand defence cooperation through military training, professional exchanges, and joint activities, with Palawan remaining a key location for many of their engagements.

Study Tour Visit of the Australian Command and Staff College 

Camp General Emilio Aguinaldo, Quezon City - Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) formally welcomed the 12-member delegation from the Australian Command and Staff College (ACSC) at the General Headquarters, marking another milestone in strengthening international military education and cooperation. Building on the success of the 2025 engagement, this year’s visit is designed to deepen the delegates’ understanding of the AFP, foster greater awareness of Philippine-Australian defense cooperation, cultivate strategic empathy and cultural appreciation, and create meaningful opportunities for professional dialogue and exchange.

The delegation was led by Ltcol Patrick Schadel, Lead Directing Staff of ACSC, and was accompanied by Ltcol Noel Young, Assistant Defence Attaché of Australia to the Philippines. Representing the AFP, CAPT Marz Dy Tadulan, Officer-in-Charge of OJ8, welcomed the delegates on behalf of MGEN Arsenio DC Sadural, J8. The Department of National Defense (DND) was also represented by Director Jesse Pascasio, who delivered a comprehensive briefing. The engagement at GHQ proved highly productive, as the delegates not only gained valuable insights from AFP and DND presentations but also actively engaged with AFP officers in dynamic discussions that enriched mutual understanding. In addition, the ACSC delegates participated in a separate engagement with student officers from the Command and General Staff College, further expanding avenues for collaboration and shared learning among future military leaders.

The activity’s success reflects the shared commitment of the Philippines and Australia to strengthen partnerships, exchange perspectives, and deepen understanding of the regional landscape through immersive learning experiences.
