VATICAN CITY — A global chorus of prayer and celebration has enveloped the Vatican as Pope Leo XIV celebrated his 71st birthday on Monday, 14 September 2026.
Marking the conclusion of a profound year of ministry, messages of affection and spiritual closeness have poured into Rome from every corner of the earth. In a beautiful display of universal solidarity, every Catholic diocese around the world, alongside the Military Ordinariate, shared in fervent prayer for the health and intentions of our Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV.
Among the many global tributes, the presidency of the Italian Bishops’ Conference (CEI) sent a warm message conveying the deep gratitude of Italy's local churches. The bishops praised Pope Leo’s steadfast reminders that the Gospel must remain the ultimate priority of church life and that true faith is rooted in a personal encounter with Jesus Christ. They also spotlighted his inspiring vision for deeply welcoming parishes, missionary communities, and active participation from the laity.
A Year Dedicated to Peace and Reconciliation
Peace has defined the very heartbeat of Pope Leo’s pontificate over the past twelve months. Ever since his election, where he famously called for an "unarmed and disarming" peace, the Holy Father has championed reconciliation in public audiences, global meetings, and historic travels. Remarkably, the Pope has woven the themes of peace and reconciliation into his addresses more than 400 times during his first year, alongside frequent calls for unity, dialogue, and human dignity.
His landmark Apostolic Journeys over the past year have broken new ground for the Church:
- Türkiye and Lebanon: In Nicaea, he marked the 1,700th anniversary of the first Ecumenical Council by calling for Christian unity, while in Lebanon he focused heavily on interreligious dialogue.
- Monaco and Algeria: He became the first pontiff in history to visit these nations, including a historic stop in Annaba (ancient Hippo) to walk in the footsteps of Saint Augustine.
- Spain: He made history as the first Pope to formally address the Spanish Parliament.
Guarding Human Dignity
Beyond his travels, Pope Leo’s first year has been rich with magisterial teaching. On 6 January, he officially brought the Jubilee Year 2025 to a close by shutting the Holy Door of St Peter’s Basilica.
He also issued his highly anticipated first encyclical, Magnifica humanitas, which directly tackled the rise of artificial intelligence. In it, he insisted that emerging technologies must always serve human dignity, freedom, and the common good. Furthermore, he completed Dilexi te, an Apostolic Exhortation initiated by Pope Francis on love for the poor—a message he put into action during a moving July visit to Lampedusa to meet with displaced migrants.
Born in Chicago on 14 September 1955, Pope Leo XIV enters his 72nd year with his providential mission clearly defined. As the global Church and military dioceses continue to lift him up in prayer, the Holy Father looks ahead to another year of steering the barque of Peter towards peace, unity, and the unyielding defence of human dignity.
