VATICAN CITY (CNS) Interim reports have been released by the study groups that Pope Francis formed to offer a thorough analysis of contentious, difficult, or "emerging" issues brought up during the Synod of Bishops on synodality.

The groups were asked to consider issues such as ministry to LGBTQ Catholics, women's leadership in the church, the appointment of bishops, and the formation of priests.

Pope Leo XIV extended the deadlines to the end of the year, despite the late pope's request that the groups finish their work by June 2025.

On November 17, however, Cardinal Mario Grech, the synod's secretary-general, stated that some groups' work "has required more time than originally anticipated given the richness and complexity of most of the topics entrusted to them."

He stated, "Some groups are now getting close to finishing their work, while others will continue in the upcoming months."
